Early goals in the first and second half put the home team in control and had they taken a majority of their chances, they could easily have doubled their score. The Central Park men took the lead within five minutes with some neat play in midfield which released Kristian Pierce on the right and his deep cross was finished clinically by Duncan Midgley. Denbigh’s wide players Eilir Edwards and Kristian Pierce were a constant source of problems to the Barmouth defence as they hit the bye-line regularly providing a supply of crosses for strikers Ian Griffiths and Duncan Midgley and after forcing a number of corners, skipper Russ Jones scored with an exquisite and delightful chip in a crowded penalty area. Further chances were spurned by Griffiths and Midgley and a Tom Sharples block-buster was well parried by keeper Darren Andrews as the home side piled on the pressure and they did not have to wait long for their third goal as good work by Pierce and Midgley set up Ian Griffiths to beat the keeper at his near post with a powerful shot. In the latter part of the half, Barmouth began to get their passing game together with Iwan Lewis and Dean Irvine prominent and after good pressure they tested keeper Gareth Roberts a few times and were unlucky not to get a penalty after a rash challenge from Todd but they went in at the interval without scoring.
Any hopes Barmouth had of getting back into the game were dashed within four minutes of the second half as Denbigh struck twice. Firstly Griffiths finished with a snap shot across keeper Andrews and then James set up Pierce whose driven low ball into the six yard area was turned into his own net by Gwynne under pressure from Midgley. Denbigh were now rampant as they piled on the pressure, Midgley put over the bar at the far post, Sharples rattled the crossbar with a dipping volley, Griffiths broke clear but his tame shot was saved and minutes later he actually took the ball around Andrews but lost his footing and shot wide of an empty goal. Denbigh could not keep up the tempo as the half progressed and the visitors began to get more possession, pushing men forward and creating chances. Iwan Lewis hit the near post with a strong drive, Craig Papirnyk put some good balls into the box which keeper Roberts held well under pressure but he could do nothing when Ieuan Brooks found space in the box and scored with an accurate cross shot. Denbigh weathered the storm and came back strongly in the last few minutes, Griffiths having a good shout of a penalty turned down and sixteen year old debutant Osian Davies diving header went narrowly wide of the post. This was an excellent performance from Denbigh as they look forward to a tough away game in the F.A.Trophy at holders Holywell next weekend.
