Denbigh with Steve Harris making his first start for the club as also was Mark Orme returning to the club after a few years sabbatical were under the cosh for the first ten minutes, with Junction quicker to the ball and playing with a high tempo and intensity. Mark Montgomery shot over the bar when well placed and a dangerous ball from the left by John Brindell went across the six yard area with no one getting the decisive touch.
Gareth Roberts in the visitors goal made two good stops as Denbigh found it difficult to get out of their half but in their first attack after twelve minutes took the lead against the run of play. Duncan Midgley forced a corner on the left and Ian Griffiths nodded home within the six yard area from Mark Roberts’s excellent delivery. This goal deflated Junction after their early pressure and apart for a good period at the beginning of the second half they very rarely threatened the visitors’ goal with Orme and Miles Todd at the heart of the defence in outstanding form, although Danny Jones did get the better of them once but his cross shot hit the post and rebounded to safety.
Jamie Roberts in the home goal made two good saves from Midgley and Sharples at the expense of corners but after twenty five minutes he was beaten again in unfortunate circumstances. A hopeful shot from Sharples from twenty five yards was going wide but it struck Ian Griffiths on the posterior and deflected into the goal with Roberts wrong footed to give Denbigh a two goal cushion. Shortly after Midgley was injured and replaced by Eilir Edwards as Denbigh began to control the game but found the Junction defence hard to break down and as half time approached they failed to add to their total as the quality of the final pass left something to be desired as did the bobbly nature of the pitch.
Seventeen minutes into the second half Denbigh made the game safe as Ian Griffiths latched on to a through ball and his cross shot to the bottom corner gave Roberts no chance. He almost added a fourth a few minutes later as did Mark Orme with a powerful header from a Steve Harris corner but Roberts saved brilliantly. Harris on the right and Edwards and the over-lapping Owain Roberts on the left got around the back a few times and put some probing balls into the box but good defending from Richard Orme and good handling from Roberts kept the visitors at bay.
Denbigh continued to push forward in the last quarter of an hour but could not find a way past a stubborn and resolute Junction defence as Roberts again handled well to keep the Denbigh forwards at bay.
