Hotspur the favourite for promotion had to make a late change as Chris Sexton was declared not fit after the warm-up and was replaced by John Luke Roberts with Tom Nathan Edwards dropping to the back four.
Denbigh were on the back foot from the kick off as Holyhead passed the ball about accurately and quickly with Mike Kelly co-ordinating attacks from his central position but the support to lone striker Mel McGuiness was slow in arriving and with Mark Orme and especially Miles Todd in top form at the heart of the home defence, chances were rare. McGuiness did get on the end of a poor defensive header from Owain Roberts, but shot wide and Todd made an excellent last ditch tackle as McGuiness again broke free.
As the half progressed the home team began to get a foothold with Tom Povey releasing Kristian Pierce who outpaced his marker but his near post cross was cleared for a corner. Steve Harris who worked extremely hard throughout had an effort which he hit directly at Heald in the visitors goal while Russ Jones after beating his man adroitly on the edge of the box sliced his left foot volley wide of the upright.
The dynamics of the second half changed within a minute of the re-start, a hopeful ball into the Denbigh box was partially cleared with the ball ricocheting off a few defenders to fall to Mike Edwards who made no mistake from eight yards. The home team re-grouped after this set back and pushed forward more to try and get an equaliser and were helped by Holyhead dropping deeper and deeper as they mentally decided to hold on to their lead. Chances were still rare but territorially Denbigh were in the ascendancy but were finding it hard to find a way passed the visitors defence with centre back Jon Peris-Jones in fine form and behind him Ben Heald’s handling was impeccable and his one handed save at the base of the post from a Russ Jones header was outstanding.
Eilir Edwards was getting the better of his marker and when he cut inside in the box he was brought down and a penalty given. Ceri James took it but Heald made a brilliant save but the linesman flagged that the goalkeeper was off his line and the kick to be re-taken. Jay Gibbs of Holyhead made comments to the referee and was sent off, and after a lengthy wait James kept his cool and beat Heald from the spot this time but then Dan McGuiness made another comment to the referee and he was also sent off.
The home team could smell the victory now and kept Holyhead penned back in their half, James lobbed to the top corner but Heald again clawed the ball away. As the game moved to it’s conclusion, Eilir Edwards of the home team was sent off for two bookable offences but this did not stop Denbigh from keeping the pressure on and after a series of corners, an accurate near post corner from Owain Roberts was headed in at the near post by the hard working Ian Griffiths with five minutes to go. Holyhead pushed forward towards the end with even keeper Heald going up for a corner but the home defence held firm and collected a valuable three points and a rare victory over a good Holyhead team.
