Denbigh Town Reserves put the division on notice on Saturday morning with a stunning 5-4 win on the road against unbeaten Connah’s Quay.
Nomads, who had not lost a game since December of last year, began the game top of the table with seven wins from seven and faced a Town side in progression.
However, a hatrick from Harrison Bellis and a brace from Tom Salisbury off the bench saw off the Nomads at the Quay 3G to make it two wins from two for Liam Nash since taking the role at the end of September.
Travelling with a light squad, Nash named just three substitutes along with himself on the bench with Salisbury carrying a knock so dropping from the XI. Harrison Bellis who was unavailable for Friday’s game against Mold for the first-team started whilst Rory Wynne took position between the sticks.
Denbigh started the game well and put pressure on Nomads early on before their pressure told on 11 minutes. Denbigh broke quickly with Serhad Kanli darting down the right before pulling it back for Bellis to finish from close range.
The Denbigh goal appeared to kickstart the Nomads who grew into the game but rarely threatened the Town backline. However, on 24 minutes a defensive blunder lead to Tom Malcom finishing with ease to level the scores.
As soon as Denbigh gave, they took away though. Less than a minute after the equaliser Town restored the advantage when captain Lewis Devine fed the ball down the right for Ossian Jones, his quick feet saw him beat his man before crossing and Salisbury was able to smash home. Not bad from Salisbury who carrying a knock had to replace the injured Kanli just four minutes earlier.
Playing with real confidence Town sensed more and on 36 minutes the lead was doubled. Bellis on the left saw no option with him and opted to shoot from a ridiculous angle which beat goalkeeper Elliot Collins.
With the wind in their sails going into the break Denbigh were in dreamland. In stoppage time Salisbury nicked the ball and from the edge of the box send a floated effort over the head of the keeper to make it four in a scintillating opening half.
Half-Time: Connah’s Quay Nomads 1-4 Denbigh Town
Nash’s side knew going into the second half that Nomads were truly going to go for it with nothing to lose. Soaking up plenty of pressure suddenly the ball broke for Denbigh and Bellis found himself in a foot race with the ‘keeper, he won it before rolling the ball into an empty net to make it five on the hour mark.
Two minutes later the deficit was reduced when Adam Jones found himself with acres of space on the left of the box to lash home. With twenty left to play James Hughes finished well on the turn and Nomads sensed a comeback for the ages.
Into the final seconds the hosts looked like they may just do it, they grabbed their fourth with a terrific long range effort from Ryan Williams. The ball continued to be shoved towards Denbigh’s box with cross after cross not being taken advantage of whilst Wynne also got himself in front of it to deny the forwards.
Eventually, after four minutes of nervous stoppage time the whistle blew and Denbigh recorded a huge win whilst ending a 10-month winning streak.
The Reserves are next in action on Saturday with a trip to Gresford Athletic.
