Denbigh Town are looking to make it a staggering 20 wins in-a-row in all competitions in midweek when they make the journey to Llay on Wednesday.

The Stakes

As the title race continues to take a number of twists and turns, Town know that at least a point will see them reach the top of the Ardal North-West. Dewi Llion’s side are a point away from top with a better goal difference than Rhyl and Bangor ahead of them, and a victory would see them two points clear.

This comes after Rhyl’s season came to an end on Saturday with a 3-4 home loss to Nantlle Vale, ending the Lilywhites’ title hopes. Bangor weren’t in action last weekend, but will return on Saturday against Nantlle Vale as they continue their fight for promotion.

Form

Denbigh’s 19-game unbeaten run comes on the back of a hard-fought 2-0 win at Llangefni on Saturday. Paul Fleming was the hero as he opened the scoring for his 25th Denbigh career goal in the first half before providing the assist for Jake Walker to make it two - a perfect way for the forward Walker to mark his 125th Denbigh appearance. Goalkeeper Aaron Jones has now kept back-to-back clean sheets though he was rarely troubled, instead his back four did well to repel any threat, including some excellent work from Denbigh’s own broom Billy Holmes who swept up well at the back.

Llay come into the game without a win in their last eight league matches. The Welfare’s last victory came in February when they beat Llandudno Albion 3-2 in Bangor. They were last in action on Saturday falling to a 1-0 away defeat at Saltney. It’s fair to say that the game of the season may well have involved Llay two weeks ago, when a twelve goal thriller at Rhostyllen ended in a staggering 6-6 draw.

Head-to-Head

Denbigh and Llay have met on few occasions over the years but the last match came less than a month ago at Central Park. Ben Lockley opened the scoring after just four minutes before Jason Foulkes doubled the lead. Harvey Bennett grabbed the third before Matthew Worrall haunted the side he left in January to make it 4-0 and wrap up the points.

It followed up a cup victory over the Welly in November as Nathan Brown grabbed a winner following Max Peate’s own goal. Peate’s time at Central Park this season has been torrid, having been sent off in the repeat match a few months later.

This is Denbigh’s first trip to the Ring since November 2021 on what was a day to forget. Llay ran rampant in a 5-1 drubbing ending Denbigh’s 10-game unbeaten league run and they’ll be hoping not to repeat that on Wednesday. Denbigh will be keen to change their fortunes at Llay, having not won at the Ring in the league this century.
