Iwan has been looking after the finances of the Club since June 2013. A chance meeting with Chairman Shon Powell saw him persuaded to take on the role, at a time when the Club was in the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance League.
Now into his 5th season, Iwan said he has seen so much change at the Club since he started both on and off the field. He said “On the field it is so pleasing to see the Club developing into one of the leading Clubs in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance. Off the field, we have also seen notable changes with the tarmacing of the car park and the construction of the new stand. We are aiming for more developments at the ground over the coming months as the Club looks to progress towards the FAW’s Tier 1 status.”
As you may imagine the work produced by Iwan as Treasurer is of the highest order. He looks after our accounts, pays the bills, corresponds with sponsors and others and generally looks after the purse strings. On match days Iwan cashes up and produces a profit /loss report and his financial reports for our committee meetings and AGMs are detailed and meticulous. Iwan does so much more for the Club though and it is difficult to see how we would manage without him. He now writes the match reports for the website and local papers as well and helps towards organising the Match Day facilities. Last season Iwan was recognised for his hard work by being presented with the Clubman of The Year award by our President Clwyd Williams - see pic.
Iwan grew up in the Green, Denbigh and is married to Eleri a midwife. They are looking to celebrate their 30th anniversary later in the year. His three children are all involved in the Club in some form – Dewi is the First Team Coach, Llinos translates an article on the Club each month for the local Welsh language paper Y Bigwn, and youngest child Sion is a part of the Development Squad.
His working career has always been in financial services, having worked for over 25 years at Barclays Bank PLC in various roles across North Wales. There then followed some 8 years as an independent financial advisor and then a short stint at a Building Society. Today he works on a part time basis for the Government’s Pension Wise service giving guidance across North Wales to people over 50 on their pension options.
A keen Evertonian, Iwan’s football was played back in the 70’s and 80’s and this was all with Trefnant when they had a team in both the winter and summer leagues. His position was as a midfielder and in his later years as sweeper, before increasing injuries and broken bones meant it was time to hang up the boots. He had just one summer as a manager – when Trefnant last won the summer league back in 1988. Nothing like leaving on a high.
Away from football Iwan enjoys mountain walking and can be seen somewhere up in Snowdonia or on the Clwydians every Sunday. We asked what was his best walk and without hesitation he replied “That has to have been a few years ago when I trekked up to Everest Base Camp with six others from the Vale of Clwyd. Seventeen days trekking in remote areas and then camping in temperatures of up to -20 was something I will never forget. It was just an amazing experience”.
As for Denbigh Town we asked for his thoughts on the Club today. He responded “As a Club we have so much going for us at the moment. The First Team are playing attractive football with an excellent management team behind them and aiming for a top three position at least this season. This is backed up by a strong Reserves Team and a young Development Team. This is the time we have to push forward to progress into the Welsh Premier League and the rewards that could come with playing at this level – just imagine, Denbigh Town playing in the Europa League”.
On that note let’s get back to this week ahead and Denbigh getting three points at Guilsfield on Saturday. However, looking at the weather forecast Iwan I think you will have more time to get up them thar hills but here's hoping!
