Denbigh Town’s unbeaten league run came to a halt this weekend as goals from Jake Roberts and Danny Warren downed Town ahead of Christmas.
In a windswept game where the elements more than played their part, Town were forced to come away from Alyn Park with nothing to show for their efforts.
Dewi Llion named a couple of changes to his side with captain Paul Fleming returning to the XI along with Dan Parry-Jones.
The first chance of the game fell to Mold as a corner was swung in and headed wide at the near post by Rhys Nash. Town replied with a chance of their own on 12 minutes as Denbigh broke leading to Worrall having a sight of goal from distance but blasting over.
Roberts almost opened the scoring for the Alex after a quarter of an hour when a cross from the right met his head, but the looping effort flew just over the bar. Mold continued to apply pressure with the wind in their favour drawing Aaron Jones into two superb saves.
On 23 minutes Josh Lock almost put Town ahead when a corner routine fell to him but his curled shot was whiskers wide. In a back-and-forth affair, an Alex free-kick from the left was swept in and kissed the crossbar as it flew over.
Both sides were dangerous on the counter and Town almost made it pay on a couple of occasions. First of all, Craig Pritchard was on the end of a brilliant cross-field ball before cutting inside and hitting a tame one at the keeper, before Nathan Brown just before the break fed Worrall who was denied by the keeper.
Half-Time: Mold Alexandra 0-0 Denbigh Town
The first chance of the second period fell to the home side as a left-sided cross met Sam Duffy but his shot only found the side netting.
Perhaps Town’s best chance of the game fell on 54 minutes when Lock picked the ball up on the edge of the box and his side-footed effort was tipped onto the bar by goalkeeper Alex Swindell.
With just over 25 minutes to play and neither side finding the net, the deadlock was finally broken. Warren ran onto a hopeful ball at the byline before crossing for Roberts to nod home. On 77 minutes that lead was doubled when Warren from just inside the box managed to slam the ball into the bottom left corner.
Denbigh were well and truly chasing the game and did manage to carve out two chances. First, Sion Jones did well to find Fleming, the skipper played the ball across to Brown inside the box but his shot was well dealt with.
In stoppage time a corner was swept in and Craig Rogers swung his leg out to volley on the turn, but the custodian was on hand.
It ends a run dating back to the end of September since Town last lost in the league, with Denbigh looking to bounce back on Boxing Day for the big one. The Vale of Clwyd Derby.
