Denbigh Town were unable to back up their lift in form on Monday as Penrhyncoch ran out 4-2 winners at Cae Baker.

Despite Nathan Brown netting his 50th and 51st goals for the club the 3-0 scoreline at the break proved too big a mountain to climb ending Town’s mini winning streak.

Dewi Llion named an unchanged starting XI from the one that beat Gresford 5-1 on Friday night but within four minutes they found themselves behind. Ifan Burrell who was bright throughout put the hosts in front.

Penrhyncoch’s infamous slopped pitch proved favourable as waves of attack threatened the Town net. On 16 minutes Brown hit one wide from distance as Denbigh’s only real sighter but five minutes later the advantage was doubled. A break from Penrhyncoch led to Cameron Allen finding Dion Phillips to dispatch.

Now Town really had to get into gear and began to improve, Iwan Roberts was unable to keep an effort down whilst Brown came close once more.

The lead was almost halved on 42 minutes when Brown went through and forced the goalkeeper into a smart stop, and in a sudden switch the home side raced into Town’s half before a cross came into the Denbigh box and was turned into his own net by Ben Lockley.

A triple change at the back was made at the break with Dan Parry-Jones, Billy Holmes and Sion Jones introduced. Dewi Llion knew his side needed to start bright but almost saw a fourth for Penrhyn when Burrell forced Aaron Jones into a superb save.

Seven minutes into the second period Denbigh handed themselves a lifeline, Keelan Williams worked well down the left before finding Keiron Roberts, he in turn fed it to Brown to mark goal number 50 for the side.

Now Denbigh began to turn the screw, just after the hour mark Owen Davies saw an effort whizz just wide before moments later the forward was brought down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Brown stepped up and sent the ‘keeper the wrong way. Game on.

Heading into the final 15 minutes and Brown was a whisker away from not only his second hatrick in as many games but the crucial leveller as well. A handball on the edge of the box led to a free-kick inside the D, he struck it sweetly but the ball crashed off the crossbar. Four minutes later another set piece from Brown hit the wall.

With five minutes remaining and Denbigh sending in a bombardment they were always vulnerable to a break, Penrhyncoch almost added their fourth just Jones denied well but moments later following a corner the game was put to bed with the home sides’ fourth via Allen.

Denbigh are next in action on Saturday when they face Gresford Athletic at the Rock.
