- Bellis belts home stoppage-time winner at Nantporth

20 years ago the day that James Blunt released the biggest-selling album of the 2000s, it was Denbigh who sent themselves back to bedlam with a 95th-minute winner.

Harrison Bellis six days removed from a hatrick for the Reserves continued his scoring with a last minute winner to snatch all three points at Nantporth.

Birthday boy Nathan Brown opened the scoring with Owen Davies making it five from five in the opening 17 minutes as Town took a 2-1 lead into the break.

Bangor fought back only for substitute Paul Fleming to net within four minutes of coming on, and despite a third fightback from Bangor, Bellis finished to put the icing on the cake of a massive win.

Dewi Llion named just one change to the XI with Aaron Jones returning from injury in the place of Luke Wilmot, whilst Bellis returned to the squad after missing last time out.

The first sight of goal came after just four minutes when neat work from Bangor saw Corrig McGonigle hit the post from a deft flick just a few yards out. Not deterred, Denbigh began getting forward well and had their just rewards on seven minutes. Davies ran through before striking both posts and Brown was on the spot to fire in the rebound.

Bangor were now on the hunt for a leveller and on 16 minutes came close when Town were forced to clear a scramble before a foul on the edge of the box led to McGonigle’s free-kick firing over.

A minute later Denbigh’s start to the game got even better, Sam Duffy made inroads down the right before squaring it to Davies to stroke home.

Despite the two goal advantage Bangor were still dangerous, and halved the defecit on 24 minutes when poor defending led to a corner not being cleared and Tom Clarke’s header trickling into the net.

Denbigh looking to restore the two goal lead had a flurry of chances come their way to see out the half. On 34 minutes Keelan Williams was denied when his powerful effort from the left was pushed wide by Bradley Farrar, before Iwan Roberts fed Davies who one on one couldn’t beat the keeper.

Half-Time: Bangor 1876 1-2 Denbigh Town

After the restart, the home side applied huge pressure as they sought an early equaliser. After consistent attack they finally found it with a left-footed finish from Mason Blackwell-Jones on 56 minutes.

Denbigh made some changes just after the hour mark when Fleming and Alfie Vaughan were introduced for Brown and Cal Butler. A minute later Aaron Jones was called upon to make a stop denying Joe Culshaw’s effort from the edge of the box.

On 66 minutes Denbigh restored their lead. Fleming who’d been on the pitch just a few moments started the move with a ball wide to Iwan Roberts before his effort is blocked and Fleming picked up the loose ball, threading it into the bottom right corner.

Four minutes later Davies had a shot deflect over for a corner before McGonigle at the other end had a bicycle kick saved by Jones who somehow got his hand to it to push over the bar. Three minutes later Bangor did find the net though, as Culshaw picked up another loose ball in the Denbigh box to smash home.

With six to play it looked like Bangor could win it with McGonigle standing over a free kick on the edge of the box, only for his effort to crash against the crossbar. Substitute Joe Sullivan had sight of goal from the edge of the box on 88 minutes but Jones did well to get down and deny.

With five minutes of added time, it looked like surely another goal would come and in the madness of the game it did. Bellis, introduced with ten minutes to spare had caused problems and eventually, the ball dropped to him in the box to poke home a famous first goal for the club.

Town now turn their attention to the JD Welsh Cup as we play host to Llangefni Town next Saturday.
