- Town into the hat for Round Three

Harrison Bellis’ series of firsts continued this weekend with a brace on route to Town’s 4-2 Cup success against Llangefni.

Two weeks ago he netted in a Town shirt for the first time in the Reserves, scored his maiden first team goal last week at Bangor and now has his first at Central Park to take control of the tie.

Denbigh came from behind in this one after an early strike from Jack Smith but a brace from Bellis saw Town go into the break with the lead. After the restart Nathan Brown extended the advantage before Ifan Mansoor came off the bench to reduce it. However, in stoppage time Paul Fleming capped off an important win to send Denbigh into the Third Round for the first time in six years.

Dewi Llion made five changes to the side that won at Bangor a week before with Harry Lockley, Mackenzie Stark, Bellis, Fleming and Alfie Vaughan coming into the XI.

Town began the opening two minutes with purpose but the game was quickly halted when captain Jack Williams went down needing treatment before being stretchered off the field after a lengthy stoppage.

After the restart Llangefni rallied and on 12 minutes took the lead when Smith picked up a loose ball and slotted it past Aaron Jones.

Denbigh’s first chance came on 22 minutes when Brown swung a corner in that met the head of Vaughan only for his effort to sail wide of the far post. Denbigh were well and truly on the hunt and on half hour should have been level only for a nice move to be ended by Bellis’ one-on-one being saved by the legs of Gethin Hughes.

Two minutes later it was at the other end where the net should have bulged. A free-kick was swung in by the visitors and met the head of Jamie Thomas, but with the freedom of the area couldn’t find the target.

Denbigh would threaten again with 35 on the clock when another Brown corner met another Vaughan header which bounced into the turf before going harmlessly wide. If that was a warning shot, the next would surely find the target and it did. Bellis began a great move by feeding it wide to Brown before his effort was pushed away by Hughes only for the in-form forward to drill the ball home on the follow-up to level things.

Into the third minute of stoppage time and Denbigh were pressing for the lead, eventually grabbing it when a bombardment of the box saw Keelan Williams float the ball in meeting the head of Brown, before it fell to Bellis to put the finishing touches to it.

Half-Time: Denbigh Town 2-1 Llangefni Town

After the break it was Town who had the first sight of goal when Williams weaved his way into the box before his effort was cleared from danger just yards out. Williams was involved again two minutes later when Harry Lockley’s cross found him at the back post but his shot cannoned off a Town attacker and away from danger.

Llangefni were still a danger and on 53 minutes Cameron Jones should have found the target but his header sailed wide after some nice work on the right. This helpful reminder saw Town refocus and on 63 minutes doubled the advantage. A free-kick 35-yards out on the right was stood over by Brown who spotted the keeper in a poor position and drilled it home.

Denbigh made the first of their changes two minutes later which included the introduction of 16-year-old Tom Salisbury for his senior home debut, as well as Billy Holmes who did the same for Denbigh 13 years beforehand.

Llangefni were running out of time but were gifted a lifeline with 18 minutes to play when substitute Ifan Mansoor was handed the ball by the Town backline and drilled it into the bottom corner with Jones rooted to the spot.

Now setting up a nervy finish, Denbigh almost restored the two goal lead when Salisbury nodded the ball down for Fleming who in turn played it to Sam Duffy, but his effort dragged wide from the edge of the box.

On 87 minutes goalkeeper Jones was called into action when Harry Hughes drilled an effort from range that the Town custodian saw late but brilliantly tipped it over the crossbar. From the resulting corner the ball was fired at goal but Harry Lockley made an outstanding goal line clearance to deny.

Into stoppage time and the game hung in the balance, but Denbigh sealed their place when Salisbury found Iwan Roberts who’s effort was saved only for Fleming to pick up the scraps and roll it under the ‘keeper to make it four.

Denbigh now enter the Third Round for the first time since 2018 whilst making it four games without defeat ahead of Friday’s Cymru North clash with Llandudno at Central Park.
